The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require every employer to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and people so employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work. What is adequate depends on your first aid needs assessment. For lower risk workplaces the HSE indicates that an Emergency First Aid at Work trained person is usually appropriate; higher risk environments normally need the three day First Aid at Work qualification as well.

Emergency First Aid at Work is a one day course covering the essentials for an emergency. First Aid at Work is three days and covers a much wider range of injuries and medical conditions. Your first aid needs assessment tells you which one, or which mix, your workplace needs.
The HSE stopped approving first aid training providers in 2013. Employers now choose a provider using the HSE's due diligence guidance, for example a regulated awarding organisation, a voluntary aid society or a provider with suitably qualified trainers and quality assurance. There is no fixed number in law. Your first aid needs assessment should consider the hazards, the number of people, shift patterns, remote or lone working and the distance to emergency services. HSE guidance gives suggested ratios as a starting point.
