On 21 September 2026 the Department for Transport published a draft of the first full rewrite of the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice since 2013: minimum footway widths and temporary walkways, a cycle-route hierarchy, new hard and soft closure definitions, vulnerable road user requirements and redrawn diagrams. When it is adopted, every Chapter 8 and Unit O1 course changes and every carded operative will need updating. Five years from the assessment date, and each unit on the card carries its own expiry. Book reassessment in the six months before expiry to avoid retaking the full unit.
