The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and trained people, based on a first aid needs assessment. Where the assessment identifies higher risks, larger numbers of staff or remote working, the HSE indicates that fully qualified First Aiders at Work are normally needed.

For stewards and general staff, Emergency First Aid at Work or Sports First Aid Response is often enough. For designated first aid posts, medical response teams and higher risk roles, First Aid at Work is the recognised standard and is frequently written into event medical plans.
First Aid at Work is the workplace first aider standard. First Person on Scene is a more advanced four day pre-hospital course for people expected to manage serious casualties for longer before ambulance services arrive, such as security operatives in crowd facing or close protection roles.
