Why manual handling matters

Over a third of all work related injuries are from manual handling. Back injuries are the biggest cause of staff absence in the UK, and yet most are preventable. This course is a superb way to show your people how to lift safely in a high impact four hour session.

Once your people have attended, they will know how to look after their back properly and your business will be protected from the cost of absenteeism and litigation. The course introduces safe working practices to move and handle loads alongside personal manual handling risk assessments.

Why Safe and Trained

We use the most up to date training material and methodologies, run courses throughout the country at times convenient to you, and provide a dedicated course co-ordinator before, during and after the training. We have trained large volumes of people across a wide array of industries.

"But we..."

We cannot release stewards for training days

Theory runs as two-hour sessions before home fixtures and assessment happens on match days.

Our stewards are agency staff

We work with clubs and their stewarding contractors; the qualification belongs to the learner.

We only need a few people

Level 4 runs for individuals; Level 2 and 3 cohorts can combine with another club where it helps.

How long does it take?

Level 2 and 3 typically three to six months across a season; Level 4 nine to twelve months.

Questions

Is manual handling training a legal requirement?

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess the risk of what cannot be avoided, and reduce that risk. Providing information and training on safe handling is a key part of reducing the risk, so for anyone whose job involves lifting or moving loads, training is expected.

How often should manual handling training be refreshed?

there is no fixed legal interval. Most employers refresh every 3 years, or sooner if the job, equipment or working environment changes, or after an injury.

Can you deliver it on our site using our own loads?

Yes. Running the session on site with the equipment and loads your people actually handle makes the training far more relevant and is our preferred approach.

Is there a maximum weight a person can lift at work?

No. The law does not set weight limits. HSE guideline figures are a filter for deciding when a more detailed assessment is needed, and the safe weight depends on the individual, the load, the task and the environment, which is exactly what the course teaches people to assess.
