Features of the physical intervention model

The model has a unique combination of features. It offers a flexible framework that responds to your agenda, a low arousal approach that does not antagonise those involved or bystanders, and highly effective skills that do not rely on pain to gain compliance.

The training is accredited and nationally recognised, meets your sector's regulatory requirements, and uses individual and team methods that look professional and are proven operationally. A problem solving approach helps staff respond to local and individual needs rather than applying a fixed set of moves.

Backed by use of force expertise

With support from some of the most experienced expert witnesses on use of force, Safe and Trained can deliver training on site for your staff. We will help you minimise the need for physical intervention in your workplace and establish the level of training required by staff in different roles.

Questions

Is physical intervention training a legal requirement for security staff?

Door supervisors need physical intervention skills as part of their SIA licence linked qualification, and the SIA expects the skills to be kept current. For other roles it is not mandated by law, but if staff may need to use force then the employer's duty of care and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 mean they should be trained in safe, proportionate techniques.

Does this course meet the SIA door supervisor requirement?

the page describes accredited, nationally recognised training that meets sector regulatory requirements. Check with us whether the specific SIA physical intervention unit or top up is included if you need it for a Door Supervisor licence.

How often should physical intervention training be refreshed?

most accredited schemes recommend an annual refresher because physical skills degrade quickly without practice. Employers should also refresh after any change in role or a significant incident.

What is a low arousal approach?

Techniques and behaviours designed to reduce, not raise, the emotional temperature of a situation. They avoid pain compliance and aggressive postures, which protects the subject, the member of staff and the organisation from injury and from allegations of excessive force.
